Healing After Hair Transplant Procedure

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

Q:

Good morning Dr. Mohebi,
I am on day six today and all seems to be going well as far as healing.  I noticed maybe a handful of folicles yesterday when I was cleaning with slightly more vigor but what is 6 of 2400 really?

My question/concern this morning is my staples area.  It is not overly inflamed or infected (as far as I can tell) but it is still incredible sensitive.  It hurts everytime I accidentally bump or graze it.  The sensitivity has increased with, suprise suprise, the decrease in the anti inflammatory drug.  Any over the counter methods that you would recommend? Topical or oral medications make no difference.

I am just really excited to have these staples taken out on saturday!  Very ready to be done with them!
Thanks,

The closed donor wound’s tenderness and sensitivity ought to lessen over time. However, after the first few days, a patient may feel discomfort when he is taking pain killers. If you feel the hair transplant donor area is getting more tender, you need to see me so we can examine your donor area to assure its normal healing.

Thanks,

Bleeding after hair transplant

Thursday, October 8th, 2009

Q:

How many days will I have a ‘bleeding’ scalp after the procedure?

A:

You should not have any bleeding after your hair transplant surgery.  Some Oozing might be present for the first night after hair restoration from the donor area and that should be all.  We usually put a bandage around the head to support the closed donor wound on the back in a strip procedure for only one night.  The bandage will be removed the day after surgery when the patient comes back to get their day one hair wash after hair transplant.  You won’t be needing the dressing on the donor area anymore after the hair wash.

Wound Product to Improve Hair Transplant Donor Scar

kelo cote for hair transplant scarQ:

Hi Dr. Mohebi,

What do you think about this topical scar gel called Kelo-cote for my hair transplant donor scar?

A:
Kelo-cote® is one of the many topical products that is used along with other methods of wound closure or by itself to improve the alignment of the wound in the early stages of wound healing.  Advanced Bio-Technologies, Inc. has developed this wound product, which can maintain the benefits of silicone gel sheets while eliminating the limitations associated with their use.

Kelo-cote® is a topical silicone gel that is used for the management of scars and for the prevention of abnormal scars in the form of hypertrophic scars and keloids. Kelo-cote® is claimed to be beneficial for a variety of scars resulting from trauma, surgery and burns.

Kelo-cote® gel dries to a waterproof sheet that is gas permeable and acts like an extra layer of skin. This wound care product can help to soften and flatten the scar of skin wounds.  Although Kelo-cote has been anecdotally reported to be useful for the donor scar from hair transplant surgery, there is little significant data to prove that claim.  I personally believe that the maturation and stretching of the scalp wound takes a long time after wound closure and post operative care using this type of wound products may not significantly impact the final appearance of the donor scar.
