This lecture was presented by Dr. Parsa Mohebi at 15th annual meeting of international society of hari restoration surgery.

ABSTRACT:
Introduction: Many studies were performed on hair loss and its socio-psychological impact. Alopecia is recognized as a moderately stressful condition. 1 Although increased anxiety and depression in balding patients are documented in many studies, no study was done to assess the possible corrective effects of hair restoration on those problems.2,3

ABJECTIVE:
This study was designed to evaluate the impact of hair transplant surgery on psycho-social aspects in patients with androgenetic alopecia.

MATERIAL AND METHOD:
The patients with androgenetic alopecia, who had their first hair transplant surgery 12 to 36 months before their follow up visit. Close ended multiple choice questions were used. The questionnaires were sent to patients by mail. Patients were asked to grade different psychosocial aspects in a scaling system. Questions were chosen based on the ones in previous studies, which were performed on psychological consequences of hair loss. We also used a series of open ended questions in a smaller group of patient who had hair transplant procedure to design the final questionnaire.

RESULTS:
Patients who had hair transplant procedure showed significant improvement in all eight criteria. The younger patients were compared with the older ones in different criteria. Lower stages of baldness were also compared with the higher stages. The result presented in the annual meeting of International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS).

CONCLUSION:
Hair transplant surgery can effectively correct the negative psycho-social impacts of hair loss.
